WORKSHOP VENUE Millthorpe School of Arts

TIME: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
FOCUS OF THE WORKSHOP
Composition, tone and colour are most important in creating a visually pleasing work of art - irrespective of the subject. Therefore, although the subject in this workshop will be landscapes, what you’ll learn can be applied to your style, other subjects, and mediums.
David will discuss the materials he uses and how his style and approach to painting have evolved over 40 years (read more about David at the bottom of this page). Because this is a small group workshop, you’ll receive individual guidance, along with group instruction.
Morning and afternoon tea will be provided. If you’d like to bring your lunch, Millthorpe School of Arts has a full kitchen with a sandwich toaster and microwave you can use.
What you’ll need to bring with you:
EASEL - A table easel to support your painting.
CANVAS / BOARD - 16 X 20 INCHES (A primed plywood, or hardboard, panel is a better option than the inexpensive stretched canvases or canvas boards you’ll find in discount stores or large retailers such as Spotlight. If you already have an inexpensive canvas/canvas board that you’d like to use, that’s fine. David recommends applying an extra couple of coats of acrylic gesso to the canvas surface.
PAINTS David will use the following oil paint colours. If you have similar colours, that’s fine - use what you have. If you would like to work in acrylics, these colours or similar colours will be fine.
ULTRAMARINE BLUE
YELLOW OCHRE
SPECTRUM YELLOW
FLINDERS RED VIOLET(Permanent Crimson or Alizarin are similar)
LIGHT RED(Terra Rosa, Mars Orange are similar)
VIRIDIAN(Phthalo Green is similar)
TITANIUM WHITE
BRUSHES - 4 or 5 bristle flats or rounds in various sizes and a rigger or liner brush for some of the finer details.
PALETTE - and one that is big enough for colour mixing
CHARCOAL STICK - used for your basic sketch
RULER - often useful
RAG - to wipe your brushes.No need for turps - David doesn’t use turps when painting.
About David: This workshop provides a wonderful opportunity to learn from a highly accomplished artist. David is a self-taught landscape painter and a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of NSW. He began exhibiting in commercial galleries in the late 1980's and has continued to develop his skills since that time.
Inspired by the Australian landscape, David’s style is distinctly his own, and he has won in excess of 100 first prizes, which is a testament to his ability as an accomplished landscape painter.
